Book Review: Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas (Spoiler Free)

April 3, 2017

“But death was her curse and her gift, and death had been her good friend these long, long years.” ― Sarah J. Maas, Crown of Midnight

When people said that book two was even better than book one, I had a hard time believing them. That is, until now. Woah Mama! If the rest of the novels are going to be like book two then I am so not ready. “Crown of Midnight” was everything I hoped it would be and more. It picks up a few months after “Throne of Glass” ended and from beginning to end is a whirlwind of plot twists, loving moments, heartbreaks, and of course, battles that rage near and far.

Celaena Sardothien is back and if you thought book 1 Celaena was good…you aren’t ready for her in this one. She is still the badass woman we all grew to love, but we get to see softer and even more feral sides of her that left me stunned. Her character development goes through many peaks and troughs throughout the book. We see her at her lowest and her highest; How she copes with danger and loss; And even how she solves the riddles that plague her mind relentlessly.

Not only is Celaena back, but so are her two companions: Chaol Westfall and Dorian Havilliard. Both men have very intriguing storylines in book 2, especially Dorian, and I cannot wait to see where they go as the books go on! There are also a bunch of new characters that will keep you guessing when it comes to their loyalties, but some(one in particular) offers comic relief that is important in a book so full of darkness and sorrow.

Don’t be frightened, there are some really lovely moments as well that left me smiling like an idiot. I found the mix of humor, love, hate, and greed to be very engrossing and it made the story that much more full of life and layers. I am also finding that in the end, this series may break my heart and somehow, I am okay with that!

We get a deeper look into the mythology of the world in this book as Celaena learns more and more. There is a much darker aspect to her world that few know about and Celaena is desperate to find the answers she seeks. Speaking of darkness, I did not expect the villain for book 2. I knew for book one, but this one snuck up on me very fast and I had to go back and re-read their introductory paragraphs to see if I had missed something. I didn’t, Sarah is just THAT GOOD.

Many things come to light in book 2, especially about Celaena’s past and I couldn’t get enough. Even though we know some things, A LOT is still a mystery and I love it! Mystery seems to be the main theme for these books, I’ve noticed. The “scary” moments were so brilliantly written that I kept staring into my own shadows afterwards…*shudders*. I have to say that this book left me speechless. The last book to do that was “Lady Midnight” and I am still not over that one. I have no idea how I am going to handle books 3-5, plus the novella! AND SHE ISN’T EVEN DONE WITH THESE CHARACTERS YET. Oh boy…

As book one was about survival, book two is about trust. Danger is lurking around every corner and Celaena is having trouble figuring out who she can confide in when it comes to her her tasks and her life. Relationships of all sorts are tested, formed, broken, and foreshadowed and I for one had no idea where it’s going. Who will Celaena end up with? I HAVE NO IDEA. I THOUGHT I DID, BUT APPARENTLY NOT!

Okay, maybe I am getting a bit worked up, as usual, but I can’t help it! The flow of the story is amazing and even when it switches perspectives, I don’t find myself wanting to skip sections or dreading it because I LOVE THESE CHARACTERS (insert Meryl Streep meme here). There is so much more to discover about Erilea and the people who dwell within it and I cannot wait to crack open book three. I cried, smiled, screamed in delight, laughed, snorted, and cursed all while reading this book and it is in those moments that I realize I should never read in public…not a good way to make friends.

Of course, I give this book 5/5 stars because what other rating is worthy? If you didn’t really like “Throne of Glass” I urge you to read book 2 because “Crown of Midnight” is:

Sorry not sorry for that gif of AU Alec! It just fit too perfectly! Anyways, read this book because it is a masterpiece and I am going to read book 3 now! I am so excited! Be on the lookout for book 3 review and follow me on Goodreads HERE for updates and lots of capital letters…whoops!

Happy Reading!
