Book Review: Infernal Devices

January 2, 2015

Hello Hello Hello, Shadowhunter enthusiast here!

So finally I finished The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare and man was it incredible. I have already read the Mortal Instruments series so i just had to order a box set of TID. If you don’t know, The Infernal Devices is somewhat of a prequel to the Mortal Instruments series. It is set in the 1800’s in London and follows a young girl by the name of Theresa (Tessa) Gray. Tessa is on her way to London from New York to live with her brother, Nate. When she arrives she is kidnapped. Shortly after she falls instep with two Shadowhunters, William (Will) Herondale and James (Jem) Carstairs. Throughout all three books they are on a quest to fight the Magister and his clockwork creations and Tessa is on a personal Journey to find out who and WHAT she really is.

Out of all three I thought the third one was the best for multiple reasons. I love how much action was in it, how much love was in it, and how Tessa had changed.

Not only do you get to meet these three main characters, but also more new characters such as: Woosley Scott, Henry Branwell, Charlotte Branwell (Maiden name Fairchild ;)), Jessamine Lovelace, Gabriel and Gideon Lightwood, Sophie Collins, and Cecily Herondale.

Besides the new characters, our favorite immortals are present as well. Miss Camille Belcourt makes an appearance as the lover of my favorite sparkly Warlock, Magnus Bane.

Magnus is a very important charcter throughout this series. He acts as a mentor, friend, warrior, and of course ladies man, sort of.

In my opinion the use of the Clockwork creatures is that it was brilliant. Throughout The Mortal Instruments they fought demons or corrupted Shadowhunters. Yet in this series it’s a whole new species that they had never experienced before.

I would be lying if I said that this wasn’t a tear jerker. I cried. Yet not for the reasons I cried in Mortal Instruments. There was more heartbreak then death in these books so it was as if Cassie was twisting my heart in almost every chapter. The character development also was a reason for the ‘happy tears’. Tessa, Will, and Jem all make very important developments throughout.

Now if you have ready City of Heavenly Fire then you know what happened to Jem. In these books that is all explained especially with all the stuff with Magnus and Alec fighting about Will. Yeah that is all cleared up. The Praetor Lupus is explained. Even the portal is introduced!

What I admire most about Cassandra is her ability to connect her worlds seamlessly. I honestly want to re-read TMI to see more connections, and I might just do that!

So that’s about it for this small review. Tell me who your favorite ship is from TID and TMI! I’d love to know. Mine are Jessa and Malec.

Thanks for reading!
